At Singapore Oceanarium, we lead and support a range of initiatives that deepen our understanding of the marine world and drive meaningful change. Our efforts span across biodiversity monitoring, research, strengthening animal welfare, and more — each driving Singapore Oceanarium on its journey to become an aquarium-based conservation institution.
Field surveys and biodiversity monitoring provide valuable insights into the health of our marine ecosystems. Such data, collected over time, can inform long-term conservation planning of coastal areas.
Fieldwork also lends itself to citizen science and public engagement. By bringing everyday Singaporeans out to the field, they are not only able to contribute to research, but also gain a deeper awareness and appreciation for local biodiversity.
From 2023 to 2024, we partnered with National University of Singapore to document species along Singapore’s shores, including Sentosa and the Southern Islands.
With expert care, controlled environments, and in-house knowledge, Singapore Oceanarium supports research to enhance our understanding of the biology, physiology, and behaviour of marine species.
Through research partnerships, Singapore Oceanarium also works closely with established academic institutions, pooling resources and expertise to push the boundaries of what we know.
Singapore Oceanarium's research focuses on:
Through the development of a species recovery conservation programme at Singapore Oceanarium, we support sustainable internal population management and aspire to contribute to recovery of local and regional biodiversity of threatened populations, such as crustaceans, sea jellies, sharks and rays.
Singapore Oceanarium prioritises the well-being and health of the animals under our care - animal welfare should and must be our utmost priority. Through regular observation and research of each animal's needs and behaviour, we strive towards creating a safe and healthy living environment for our animals.
