From Wonder to Action this World Oceans Day

Published on 25 May 2026

The ocean may sometimes feel distant from our daily lives, but it’s often closer than we think. This World Oceans Day, join in a global celebration of our blue planet and discover how everyday actions can help protect the waters we all depend on.

When was the last time you really thought about the ocean?

Maybe it was during a beach holiday, watching the waves roll in. Maybe it was while enjoying your favourite chilli crab or seafood dish. Or maybe… not recently at all.

And that’s exactly why World Oceans Day matters.

Celebrated every year on 8 June and recognised by the United Nations, it’s a chance to reconnect with the blue heart of our planet. This year’s theme, “REIMAGINE: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean”, invites us to rethink how we see, value, and care for the ocean—and what this could mean for our collective future.

But caring for the ocean isn’t just for marine biologists, divers, or people who live by the sea. The truth is, it’s already part of our everyday lives. Reimagining our relationship with the ocean begins with recognising just how deeply connected we already are.

Covering more than 70% of our planet, the ocean helps regulate our climate, produces much of the oxygen we breathe, and supports food and livelihoods for millions around the world. Even if your day starts in the city instead of by the coast, the ocean is still at work in ways we don’t always see—sustaining, shaping, and connecting life on Earth.

At Singapore Oceanarium, these connections come to life in immersive, inspiring, and sometimes surprising ways. A journey through its habitats takes you from sunlit shallow waters to the mysteries of the deep ocean, revealing how life has adapted over millions of years to thrive in diverse and unique ecosystems.

Beyond what guests see, there’s just as much happening behind the scenes. In the Aquarist Lab, sea jellies are carefully bred and nurtured, while young animals receive dedicated care through their earliest life stages. Breeding programmes for species such as Indo-Pacific Leopard Sharks and Bowmouth Guitarfish also play an important role in supporting healthy populations for the future.

Just next door, the Research and Learning Centre—a net zero-energy building—brings together conservation, science, and education, helping to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.

The best part? Caring for the ocean doesn’t have to start with something big. It can begin with simple, everyday choices:

  • Bring a reusable bottle or bag
  • Dispose of waste responsibly
  • Choose seafood from sustainable sources
  • Save water and energy at home
  • Join a coastal clean-up with friends or family
